Samsung Electronics has introduced two new camera sensors – ISOCELL Fast 2L9 and ISOCELL Slim 2X7 – for Smart phones on Wednesday. Samsung has four categories for their camera sensors; the fast, slim, ultra and bright. Let us have a look what the introduction of these two brings to Samsung Smart phones’ cameras:
ISOCELL Fast 2L9
It is a 12MP sensor with 1.28µm dual pixels having two photo diodes in each. It brings down the pixel size from 1.4µm pixels while maintaining the dual pixel support. The two photo diodes in each pixels enables fast and highly accurate autofocus on still as well as moving objects. With 12 million focus detecting pixels, the sensor is able to focus on tiny objects even in low light conditions. Dual Pixel technology essentially allows single lens cameras to click images with depth-of-field effect for taking out-of-focus photographs. Reduced size means ISOCELL Fast 2L9 can fit in slimmer camera modules, enabling bump-less cameras on Samsung Smart phones.
ISOCELL Slim 2X7
With the size of 0.9 µm, the slim 2X7 becomes Samsung’s first 24MP camera sensor having a size less than 1 micron. But the small size doesn’t affect the quality, as it is capable of taking brighter pictures even in the dark, thanks to its Tetracell Technology. The technology merges four neighbouring pixels to work as one producing brighter pictures even in the low light conditions. In bright environments, Tetracell uses a re-mosaic algorithm to produce full resolution images. ISOCELL technology’s improved DTI (deep trench isolation) ensures that the colour intermixing is reduced, providing high-color reproduction and less noise in the images. The small size of the sensor enables it to be fitted in thinner camera modules, giving slim and elegant design to smart phones.
“Samsung ISOCELL Fast 2L9 and ISOCELL Slim 2X7 are new image sensors that fully utilize Samsung’s advanced pixel technology, and are highly versatile as they can be placed in both front and rear of a smartphone,” said Ben K. Hur, Vice President of System LSI Marketing at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung plans to further develop the Dual Pixel and 0.9μm-pixel product categories,” he added.
With Samsung’s latest flagship release, Galaxy S8, missing out these camera sensors, do you think both the sensors will make it on next year’s Galaxy S9? S9 is rumored to feature a dual camera setup and the size of these latest sensors really makes a mouth-watering wait for its release. Future wise we hope to see a Tizen flagship smartphone and these camera’s will definitely help differentiate them from the crowd. Come on Samsung, your Tizen phones could do with these 😉
