Samsung & NAGRA Develops TVkey, which Delivers pay-TV access via USB Dongle

Samsung Electronics yesterday announced a next generation security solution it developed in collaboration with NAGRA, one of the global leader in secure, end-to-end digital media technoloies ranging from content protection to engaging multiscreen user experiences and cloud TV. The security solution enables consumer to access pay-TV services directly on their televisions without a set-top box or second remote. This is achieved with the use of a low-cost USB dongle known as TVKey which ensures content protection aside eradicating the need for a set-top box or second remote.
The brand new TVKey security system works in sync with the built-in terrestrial, satellite and cable tuners featured in Samsung Smart TVs to give consumers a reliable connection. While providing the highest level of content protection, the TVKey secirity system also comes at affordable cost.
Speaking on the new system, Jong-hee Han, Executive Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics had this to say:

“We are committed to providing our consumers with access to all of their favorite content on their Samsung SUHD TVs,”
“By partnering with NAGRA on TVkey, we are setting a new standard for the industry, enabling pay-TV providers to securely deliver premium UHD content directly to consumers.”

The TVKey content security solution gives pay-TV operators the leverage to easily add more new subscribers to their existing one, thereby broadening their existing business models and also reducing the acquisition costs incurred by consumers. The system also meets the stringent requirement set by the American movie industry, Holywood for protection of 4K and HDR content.
Speaking also about the new technology, Maurice van Riek, NAGRA Senior Vice President of Content and Asset Security said,

“In working with Samsung, we are providing consumers and pay-TV operators with a flexible and economical route to UHD services, while offering state-of-the-art pay-TV security,”
He went on, “By integrating our latest content protection technology alongside open standards, such as USB and HbbTV/HTML5, we not only ensure excellent security, but also deliver a feature-rich, operator-branded user experience directly to the consumer’s TV.”

The TVKey security system is expected to launch into the market by the end of 2016 and the service is expected to be extended to additional markets in early 2017.
Samsung and NAGRA aims to develop TVKey into an open market solution which would grant full access to the wider television industry world wide. Samsung did not exactly specify when that would happen but  the tech giant has promised to post details on when the open market deployment will take place on the official TVkey website.
