Samsung have launched the Gear S2 smartwatch, classic and sport versions, in quite a few countries globally this year. There is however another variant that has not reached many foreign shores as of yet! Today, Samsung and the TIM mobile network have launched the first smartwatch in Italy that features an embedded SIM (eSIM). This work has been done in collaboration with international digital security firm Gemalto, who through its platform, will ensure the proper management and customization of the mobile radio service directly within the eSIM.
The eSIM enables devices like the Gear S2 Classic 3G to effortlessly connect to TIM’s network in Italy using a QR code. Users are able to make calls, send text messages, and receive certain notifications all without the need to be connected to a Smartphone for cellular data connectivity. Using this technology you can easily activate and update your subscription remotely to the TIM service. This is cutting technology and in the near future we should see it being implemented in more devices such as smartphones and tablets.
We will also see the eSIM technology making head way in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. This initiative is made possible with the 3 key players Samsung, TIM, and Gemalto working together to contribute to the development of services for IoT.
The smartwatch Gear S2 Classic 3G Samsung will cost 399.90 euros standalone price or up to 49 euros initial payment and 10 euro per month payment for 30 months.
