Samsung delays the launch of the Galaxy Fold until further notice

It’s official. Samsung has confirmed that it’s delaying the launch of its much talked-about foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. It was scheduled to be launched on April 26 in the US. However, the review units it distributed to tech bloggers and vloggers apparently broke down within a few days of use. While some of those could be self-inflicted damages, a few others seemed to be caused by faulty units. Samsung now wants to evaluate the whole scenario, and has rightly decided to delay the launch of the Galaxy Fold.

New launch date will be announced soon

The Galaxy Fold didn’t quite go according to the plan for Samsung. After month of speculations, when the device finally arrived, it got surrounded by all the negativity. The device’s durability has come into question after several review units failed in quick succession. Some units broke after the confusing “protective layer” was mistakenly pulled off the screen, while in other cases, debris seemingly made its way into the device through the gap around the hinge. A few units, meanwhile, failed without any obvious reason.

Some of these failures, however, could have been avoided had Samsung put on a warning to not pull the protective layer off, or to keep the device safe from elements as it lacks any sort of ingress protection. The company now seems to be about to do that.

“We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold,” Samsung said in a statement. This means Samsung will now reopen all the retail boxes and put some warnings and tips on how to use the Galaxy Fold safely.

Samsung hasn’t announced a new launch date yet, but says it’ll do so in the coming weeks. The company is giving itself plenty of leeway with its non-committal timeframe. However, if there isn’t any major issue, it shouldn’t take much long, given the limited production run of the Galaxy Fold. Hopefully, the world’s first foldable smartphone will be back soon.
