Tizen to be on everything according to Samsung Co-CEO

The battle ground for the mobile OS is not just on the old smartphone or even tablets but also includes other areas tat can include the embedded space. The MeeGo OS that came before Tizen set its sights on SmartPhones, Tablets, IVI (Car), TV and Netbooks. Unfortunately these dreams did not materialise and Intel assisted in passing the gauntlet onto Tizen, which is an OS that allows Samsung (amongst others) to distances itself from the reliance on the Google Android OS.
In a recent Interview Samsung Electronics co-CEO J.K. Shin with CNET (Korean and English), Shin made it known that Tizen was not just a pet project or a “simple alternative for Android.” He sees it not only on smartphones but also to vehicles and other industries. On IVI Intel are already progressing Tizen with much industry support, yet again continuing the work of MeeGo. Shin saw Tizen making an impact in this area in 2015.

“There are many convergences not only among IT gadgets, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, and cameras, but also among different industries like cars, bio, or banks,” he said. “Cross-convergence is the one [area] Samsung can do best since we do have various parts and finished products.”

Tablets was another area that would be suited to Tizen but there were no further details given.

“There will be good news on the tablet soon,” he said. “Please wait and see.”

Shin also brushed aside recent rumors that Samsung would drop Tizen, and maintained that the company considers it a key operating system alongside Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. This is exactly the message of assurance that many were looking for from Samsung.
