Two years ago, it was all over the news that Samsung is building its GPU to augment the home-grown Mongoose CPU cores. At the time, it was the only logical option because the entire 2015 flagship lineup used Exynos 7420 thus the in-house SoCs evolved from a regional option to a global chipset.
A Korean source on Chinese social site Weibo confirmed that the GPU will be utilized in 2017 or 2018. This GPU is expected to feature in Galaxy S8/S9. To develop the GPU, it has to go through the Heterogeneous System Architecture (HAS) which relies on integrating the CPU and GPU on the same board which will enhance the general performance and boosts its overall speed.
Right now, it appears that it appears that Samsung will still have to rely on Andreno 540 for its coming Samsung Galaxy S9. However, it is not relenting in attempts to develop its own GPU as recent information suggests that the latest job openings in Samsung indicate that the South Korean tech giant might be looking to reduce dependency on ARM and proceed to make its own custom mobile GPU.
For many years now, Samsung has been using ARM’s Mali and Qualcomm’s Adreno GPU which comes with the processor in its smartphones. It definitely has some plans and its own custom made GPU may just be on its way. In the recent Samsung job opening, the responsibilities state that “You will be a member of the GPU performance team and a key contributor in identifying workloads and developing tests for GPU performance analysis and verification”. Other responsibilities include Specify and review GPU performance and test plans for graphics (GLES) as well as compute (OCL) workloads. This shows that Samsung’s concerns right now is all about GPU development. We can only keep our fingers crossed while we wait for Samsung to make an announcement sometime in the future.
