Industry leaker billbil-kun has revealed some alleged new information about the as-yet-unannounced PlayStation 5 Pro console, gaming’s worst-kept secret
In an article on the French site, Dealabs (translated from French by Google Translate), the leaker outlined all the information he had gathered about the new Sony console.
billbil-kun has been right about leaks ranging from free games on the Epic Store, to Civilization 7’s release date, to the Astro Bot game launching in September, before it was announced. Whether he’s right here remains to be seen.
The name
First of all, the name. Journalists and speculators have been referring to the device as the PlayStation 5 Pro without anything solid to base this on beyond Sony’s convention. billbil-kun has confirmed that the new console will indeed be called the PS5 Pro.
The expected design
While billbil-kun was unable to share an image due to copyright reasons, he claims to have seen visuals of the PS5 Pro’s box, which shows off the console. To get around the restrictions, he has reproduced the design with a drawing to illustrate the console.
The design is very similar to the PS5 Slim, with a white case, and two USB-C ports and a power button on the front of the machine.
The console does have a slight variation with three black stripes across the machine’s outer casing. billbil-kun speculated from what he saw that any cosmetic facades purchased for the PS5 Slim would work for the PS5 Pro, but that is uncertain.
The leaker also mentioned the console’s size. It appears to be slightly thicker than the PS5 Slim.
Should we expect a disk drive with the PS5 Pro?
The version of the PS5 Pro that billbil-kun saw did not have a disk drive. However, this does not rule out the existence of two versions, one digital-only and one with a physical drive. It has not been confirmed or denied by any leaks or information yet.
The current speculation suggests that Sony’s focus will be the digital-only version due to the lower and more attractive price point it can provide for this version.
The DualSense 5 is still the controller
One DualSense 5 controller will ship with the PS5 Pro, same as the original PS5 and the PS5 Slim. The upgraded, premium DualSense Edge, which launched in 2022, retails for $199.99 and was unlikely to be a pack-in with any model.
When can we expect a PS5 Pro announcement?
Presently, the PS5 Pro has not been officially announced or acknowledged by Sony. billbil-kun has stated that he expects the official announcement to be sometime during the first half of September.
Industry insider Jeff Grubb stated on a Giant Bomb podcast this week that he expects there to be a Sony State of Play presentation sometime before the end of September. Whether the State of Play will include an announcement of the PS5 Pro remains to be seen, but it seems like a solid bet.
Other rumours about the PlayStation 5 Pro
billbil-kun is a highly respected leaker with a track record for accuracy. Earlier this month he correctly leaked the release date for Civilization 7 before 2K’s presentation at GamesCom, along with frequently being ahead of the official announcements for Epic Games and PlayStation.
Many other rumors are swirling around the highly-anticipated console. YouTuber and occasional leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead posted a podcast where he claimed to have information about the specs of the console, gained from a devkit version of the device.
In his Broken Silicon podcast, the YouTuber stated that the new console will have 2TB of storage space, will use the same 2-pronged power connector as the PS5, and will be a “very quiet and cool running machine.”
