The European video-on-demand (VOD) service Rakuten TV has announced that it will release 100 Ultra HD HDR movies for Samsung Smart TVs by the end of this year.
According to Rakuten TV (formerly Wuaki.tv), titles like Baywatch, Transformers: The Last Knight, Baby Driver and Spider-Man: Homecoming are already available in 4K HDR quality. They will be adding more to the list soon. The content, with Dolby Digital Plus sound, will be only available through Samsung’s TV PLUS service for Tizen Smart TVs.

“Samsung is making an effort to offer the best TV experience, and we are happy to have found in Rakuten a partner that shares our goal,” added Heeman Lee, VP, visual display business, Samsung Electronics.

Samsung and Rakuten TV had signed a partnership, at MIPTV in April this year, which would expand availability of Samsung’s TV PLUS service across Europe. The deal also made Rakuten TV the first VOD service to sell newly released, premium 4K HDR movies across Europe.
“We’re proud to partner with Rakuten Wuaki to expand the availability of TV PLUS in Europe, offering the fastest way to discover the latest 4K HDR movies and entertainment on Samsung QLED TVs.” Mr. Lee said after signing the deal.
