Questboard – back to the old-school RPG aiming to get the nostalgia crowd polishing their dice

There’s a definite indie move towards retro-feeling PC RPGs at the moment. Obviously, Dwarf Fortress continues to do well, then we have games like Warsim and Caves of Qud that eschew fancy graphics in favor of a more old-school vibe. That is also where Questboard joins the party.

No, it doesn’t look like Baldur’s Gate 3 but it is reminiscent of the type of text-based adventuring many of us did when we were younger, more innocent, and easily occupied.

For me, I remember Phantasie II and the original Bard’s Tale took over my early teenage years, and so, the green (Gameboy-ish) hues of Questboard are instantly recognizable.

Devs Binary Cabin describes the game as “a nostalgic throwback to classic text-based RPGs with a modern twist. Inspired by the cozy, immersive feel of retro PC adventures, Questboard brings players into a world of story-driven exploration, choice-driven gameplay, and strategic decision-making. Questboard is a love letter to fans of retro RPGs and story-driven games.

“I wanted to create a game that feels like stepping back in time but with a fresh approach to storytelling and player interaction,” said Jeff Kilroy, developer at Binary Cabin. “Questboard gives players the freedom to craft their own adventure in a way that feels personal and immersive.”

There is a demo coming to Steam next month with the full release of Questboard lined up for 2025. You can wishlist it on Steam right now.
