‘Operational issues’ is the best reason we are going to get for PSN’s massive downtime this weekend

I think next time the bosses here at Readwrite ask why I haven’t finished something on time, or why I have made so many spelling mistakes I am just going to say, ‘Operational issues mate”. If it’s good enough for a megacorp like Sony and Playstation, then it is good enough for me.

This weekend was a big weekend for a lot of PlayStations owners, or at least it should have been. Free Call of Duty, access to the Monster Hunter Wilds Beta test. Lots of fun to pass the time of day. And then the PlayStation network melted across the globe. For a whole day.

During the course of the day, subscribers were treated to radio silence – although there was a post on X after virtually a day when a ‘feature’ appeared explaining how storage space worked and how to add an M2 drive.

While this was obviously scheduled perhaps days ago it was met with a torrent of disdain:

“The servers have been down for roughly 20-22 hours and you are tweeting about Storage space”

“Is the m.2 SSD card gonna make the server work?”

“Bold of you to advertise something that can extend the storage of a machine which, as of around 6pm CST yesterday, is a literally useless white plastic brick.”

An hour after that badly-timed post we finally got the news that PSN network had been turned off and on again and low and behold was up and running.

“PSN has been restored. You should be able to access online features without any problems now. For more details: https://status.playstation.com Sorry for the inconvenience!”

A blase “sorry for the inconvenience” obviously was not going to cut it with the internet crowd and five hours later, presumably after there had been a panic meeting, finally, some form of compensation and reason was offered.

Yeah, operational issues. Oh, and five days of free service:

Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience. All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service.”

Many are not happy with the offer of free days, after all, it doesn’t really affect you much if you are paying monthly and seems like largely the barest of minimums to give away, but folks are also extremely unhappy with the lack of comms throughout the incident, leading to rumors off DDoS attacks and hacks of data.

Whether we will get a further run-down is probably doubtful, but this was not a good weekend for PlayStation and the drive to digital over physical copies of games.
