OpenAI has confirmed its ChatGPT app for Windows is now available to all users.
The service was previously restricted to paying ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but it has been opened up to all users of Windows 10 and 11.
A dedicated Windows app is likely to be welcomed by many, to move beyond the existing web functionality. The new tool means PC users can open a “companion window” on screen, to work alongside various Windows programs or other open tabs, with no subscription required.
As reported by PC Mag, OpenAI product developer Alex Embiricos provided more detail on how the companion works.
“It’s a little window you can pull up by pressing Alt + space,” he said.
“It’s really easy to start a new chat without breaking your flow, pick up where you left off, or ask follow-up questions,” added Embiricos.

Preview access to ChatGPT Advanced Mode
The GPT for Windows app is also able to take screenshots providing a direct method to feed the AI tool, instead of manual uploads, which users can still opt for. There is a personal touch with the option of a customized hotkey to open up the ChatGPT companion window.
Users will find the app has much the same features as found in the web-based version of GPT, including the recently launched Search and Advanced mode but those services can only be accessed with a $20 monthly subscription.
The company led by Sam Altman, who predicted AGI to arrive next year, is currently enticing users of the app with a preview glance of Advanced Mode lasting around 10 minutes.
OpenAI is also upgrading the ChatGPT app for macOS, providing a boost for Apple users, with the key improvement enabling the app to utilize code from third-party apps.
Initially, the function will be limited to a select number of apps, but users will have to manually activate it and choose which data the GPT app can read, for privacy purposes.
