Nintendo Switch gets increasingly rare firmware update to 19.0.1 – here’s what’s new

As the Switch travels the path towards end of life and a new model gets closer to announcement, Nintendo has long since seemed done with making major changes to the Switch’s firmware.

Over the course of the mega-popular console’s lifespan, we are now into the 19th iteration of on-board firmware and the dramatic changes of the “olden days” are long gone.

Translating the patch notes from today’s Japanese announcement doesn’t really bring up much exciting so adjust your expectations – here’s what 19.0.1 brings to your handheld.

Switch 19.0.1 Patch Notes

Only two “major” changes are highlighted in the patch notes, one around support for the Game Cube controller and another a bug squasher for a problem with software downloads. Here’s what Nintendo has to say about what’s fixed:

Several issues have been fixed, including the following fixes, and the stability and usability of the operation have been improved.

  • Fixed an issue where the connection tap and the Nintendo GameCube controller may not be recognized when using the Nintendo GameCube Controller Connection Tap.
  • Fixed an issue that caused communication processes such as software downloads to not work properly during sleep.

It does say that several issues have been fixed including the above and stability has also been improved, not that the Switch’s operating system hasn’t been extremely stable for literally years now.

It could well be that 19.0.1 may be one of the final updates to the OG Nintendo Switch’s firmware. It is unlikely to see much of a change although it wouldn’t surprise us if v20 came out to bring some of the features in line with whatever the Switch 2 has to offer, especially if the Switch 2 is offering backwards compatibility.
