Nintendo is pulling the plug on its gold points scheme from the My Nintendo rewards scheme next month.
Players will no longer be able to earn gold points, a digital currency first released back in 2016. These could previously be exchanged for discounts on eShop purchases.
It was announced through a blog post on the Nintendo site on February 18, 2025.
It said: “On March 25th, 2025, the ability to earn Gold Points will end. Gold Points already earned can still be used on Nintendo eShop to receive a discount, even after this end date.
“We sincerely thank you for using the My Nintendo rewards program and apologize for any inconvenience.”
The My Nintendo program will remain alongside Platinum points, which can be exchanged for physical and digital merchandise items.
No reasons have been given for the removal, though many speculate that the recent announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 may have been a factor.
What to do with current gold points
Any pre-orders made, such as the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A, before March 24, 2025, will still earn gold points.
Digital and physical purchases made by March 24 will still reward gold points, so long as the title was released beforehand. The silver lining is that any gold points earned will remain active for 12 months and will continue to do so past March 25, 2025.
This means that you can still use any current points you’ve earned for discounts after Nintendo officially removes them. You will still be able to use them to claim discounts on games through the Nintendo eShop. However, any purchases made after March 25, 2025, will no longer award gold points.
In the blog post, Nintendo said: “Any previous commitment by Nintendo of Europe SE to grant Gold Points outside of the methods described above will still be fulfilled.
“Additionally, customers may also be granted Gold Points for exceptional reasons at Nintendo’s discretion, even after March 24th, 2025.”
This means that any gold coins you’ve saved or earned can still be valid by the end of the year, and can save you some money when it comes to the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility feature.
With 2025 set to have an exciting line up of games, every coin counts. So spend wisely, because come March you won’t be able to earn any more.
