Netflix broke new records over the weekend, as 60 million households tuned in to watch the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson boxing fight.
The streaming provider partnered up with Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions company, with the duo creating the event that was streamed live on Netflix on Friday (November 15).
While many were hoping to see the champion win once more, it was the YouTuber turned boxer, Jake Paul, who was declared the winner by unanimous decision.
The fight consisted of eight two-minute rounds and a record number of viewers were watching. In a Netflix press release, the company says: “60 million households watched the Paul vs. Tyson main event live around the world, peaking at 65 million concurrent streams.”
The hashtag PaulTyson was the number one trending topic worldwide on Elon Musk’s X platform, with the fight dominating the social conversation as it accounted for 11 of the Top 11 trending topics in the US.
Watched by millions, Netflix breaks records with Paul vs Tyson fight
The co-main event featured Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano who fought a bloody 10-round rematch war for the Undisputed Super Lightweight World Championship. Nearly 50 million households globally watched Serrano vs Taylor 2 which could make it the most watched professional women’s sporting event in US history.
Not only did the night bring in huge numbers and a star-studded ringside audience, but Paul vs. Tyson and Taylor vs. Serrano 2 has been declared the biggest boxing gate outside of Las Vegas in US history.
The Paul vs. Tyson gate has surpassed $18 million which is double the previous Texas gate record for combat sports in both boxing and MMA, topping Canelo Álvarez’s record of $9 million.
The event began before Friday for Netflix though as they brought out a documentary called ‘Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson’ just days before the main event began. This offered boxing fans an insight into their training camps and personal lives as they prepared for the heavyweight boxing match.
Its the latest in the company’s push into the sports world. Over the last few years, several sports-related series have been created including Formula One’s ‘Drive to Survive,’ the golf-focused ‘Full Swing,’ and the Tennis-based ‘Break Point.’
Netflix also made the move into live sports streaming at the end of 2023 when it launched ‘The Netflix Cup’ which was a star-studded celebrity golf tournament. In March of 2024, it then did the ‘The Netflix Slam’ event with Carlos Alcaraz.
