Midjourney introduces “powerful” new image editor

Midjourney has transformed its edit image function with the release of its new web tool.

Previously, Midjourney’s 20 million plus users had to upload an existing image to its interface or Discord server as a basis for their AI image generator models to work their magic, including the latest Midjourney 6.1 version.

The reference picture would not actually be changed in a meaningful way, but with the new “edit” feature, users can upload any imagery and properly edit sections or give the elements a true makeover, including their style and structure.

It effectively upgrades Midjourney from creating AI-powered art to allowing users to modify existing images.

Midjourney founder and CEO David Holz appeared on the company’s Discord to proclaim the new web editor is so powerful that the company is going to “restrict the deployment.”

Access will be limited to a “subset of the current community,” with the CEO adding the company would enhance human moderation and introduce “new, more advanced AI moderators” to combat abuse.

The new Midjourney Image Editor appears to be restricted to its latest 6.1 AI model.

Holtz acknowledged uncertainty around restricting access to the new feature and how it may be perceived, but he said the company will conduct a survey to gauge user opinions.

Class action case

Despite its proliferation, Midjourney is embroiled in a class action of human artists, along with other AI firms, for alleged copyright issues.

As detailed by VentureBeat, the companies are said to have infringed copyright with alleged scraping of human-made work without express permission, authorization, consent, or compensation to train their models.

The case is currently in the courts.
