Linux/GENIVI will slowly replace Microsoft Windows IVI

Mobile connected infotainment systems (IVI) will increase from 7.8 million (currently) to 46.8 million units by the end of 2018 according to Analyst firm ABI research. The increase will be due to the encouragement of Linux/GENIVI which aims to increase the percentage of deliveries. QNX software and Microsoft dominate 75-80% of the IVI operating system market.

“The automotive industry has undergone a number of dramatic paradigm shifts”  “The adoption of open source platforms, such as the GENIVI is one example. In this case, the automotive industry reflects the trends in the mobile industry.” Gareth Owen (principal analyst at ABI Research).

Open source software is in application within one high profile system which has been shown in various models of General Motors Cadillac 2013 , ABI Research estimates that the platform based on Linux/Linux GENIVI will be replacing Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive OS even though parts of the OS have now been unlocked by Microsoft.
