Las Vegas casino facing lawsuit over 22 storey elevator fall

A patron has filed a lawsuit against the Palms Casino in Las Vegas following an elevator malfunction that caused alleged significant injury.

Rebecca Keith Wood lodged the complaint in February last year, after the incident in June 2023 when the elevator plunged 22 stories before an abrupt halt.

She was staying at Palms Place, a condo-hotel connected to the Nevada resort, which houses a full-sized casino, restaurants, and other nightlife.

The elevator is said to have suddenly dropped before it “violently slammed” at the bottom level, causing various injuries.

Ms Wood has detailed damage to her limbs, organs, and nervous system, with the potential for permanent damage.

To date, there has been no public acknowledgement of the incident from the casino or hotel management, with further information expected to follow.

Defendants alleged to have failed in their duty of care

Initially, the legal claim named Otis Elevator Company as a defendant, but court records have since been amended with Otis dismissed from the case.

The remaining defendants in the picture are Palms Place LLC and Station Casinos, with both entities accused of negligence. It is claimed they failed in their duty to maintain or inspect the elevator, with a further failure in duty of care to guests.

The case outlines that the defendants did not perform their duty to keep the elevator in safe working order.

In this action, the damages have been listed “in excess of $15,000” which is the minimum amount for a case to proceed in Nevada’s District Court.

The reality is that the claimant will be seeking much more, given the injuries alleged, with further claims of long-term pain, medical bills, legal costs, and lost income.

Similar cases have been known to run into hundreds of thousands or low millions.

At this stage, with no statements in the public domain, there has also been no trace of CCTV footage or witness details.

The pending, legal case is ongoing.
