Is Civilization VII crossplay? Not at the moment it’s not as Firaxis has disabled it to address issues

Civilization 7 is a hugely complex title with an extremely demanding fanbase. The Early Access period didn’t get off to the best of starts last week with UI problems plaguing the game, even though, most generally accepted that the actual game itself was a half-decent start point for what’s to come.

As we said last week, we hold full confidence that Firaxis will fix up the issues quick-smart and that certainly seems to be the case, although there may be a little more short-term pain before we get to where we need to be.

For example, Firaxis has decided to disable cross-play between the PC and console versions of the game right now as a patch has been released for the computer version of the game (PC, Mac, and Linux).

The end result of the patch not being ready for console versions yet is that crossplay has had to be disabled, albeit hopefully temporarily until the other boxes catch up.

A patch note confirmed this to be the case saying, “To expedite updates to the PC experience, we will sometimes deploy patches to PC at a different cadence than we do on consoles – including today’s Patch 1.0.1. As a result, cross-play between PC players and console players is temporarily disabled. This will have no impact on console players attempting cross-platform play with other console players, nor on PC-to-PC multiplayer.”

The change comes in Patch 1.0.1 and fixes up some of the issues people highlighted in the aforementioned early access period last week.

It seems unlikely that crossplay will be gone for long, as hopefully once the patch cycle catches up across the board we will be able to play (and beat comfortably) our console-owning opponents once more.

Meanwhile, in case you missed it, there has also been a VR version of Civ VII announced, and you can read all about that upcoming release in our story from yesterday.
