Civilization VII in VR? Mixed Reality comes to Sid Meier’s classic strategy franchise

Civilization VII has had a slightly rocky, and probably expectedly so, start to life, but we are confident it won’t be long before Firaxis sorts out many of the initial complaints and eventually also removes Denuvo from the game.

Before all that happens though it may well be we are donning our VR headsets and rubbing virtual shoulders with leaders and our advisors in mixed reality in the comfort of our own living rooms, as Civilization VII VR has just been announced and is around the corner.

The first board game I played in VR was Brass Tactics way back on the regular Oculus Rift and even then it was apparent that the format just works, so the opportunity of laying out a table with the Civ VII world in front of you in your own setting and playing the game more like a board game looks like a huge amount of fun.

As you can see from the video below leaders and advisors seem to pop into your space and stand next to you handing out advice where in the game it would be a pop-up box. Here we have, “Iconic world leaders surround the Command Table, reacting whenever you forge alliances or declare war.

This is immersive stuff for Civ fans. There is no real indicator at this stage about how and if the main game has been dumbed down to effectively work with mobile phone hardware suspended in front of your eyeballs. We assume it has in some way, but playing this venerable old franchise in a truly new way will definitely be appealing, and could also open up the Civ games to a brand new audience.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR will be available for Meta Quest 3 and 3S this Spring and can be wishlisted now.
