With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 fast approaching (December 20), the cast is taking to the press to hype up the new movie. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Idris Elba, who plays Knuckles the Echidna voiced his interest in co-starring with Keanu Reeves, who plays Shadow the Hedgehog, in another video game adaptation.
In the interview, Elba was asked if he would be interested in participating in a Cyberpunk 2077 movie with Reeves, and he was enthusiastic, saying if any video game would be suited to a live-action adaptation, it would be Cyberpunk 2077. “Oh, man, that’s a great question. I think if any film could do a live-action rendition, it could be [Cyberpunk 2077], and I think his character and my character together would be, ‘Whoa.’ So, let’s speak that into existence.”
Keanu Reeves plays one of the game’s main non-player characters, the anarchist metal musician Johnny Silverhand, and Idris Elba plays Solomon Reed, a key character added in the Phantom Liberty DLC. The game continues to receive attention and updates from the developers even four years after release, but there are no confirmed plans for more story content to be added, so if there was a film or TV show, it would likely follow the main plot and/or the Phantom Liberty DLC plot, or be an entirely new story set in the world of Cyberpunk.
Could there be a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation?
CD Projekt Red has entered into an agreement with Anonymous Content Studios to make a live-action something for Cyberpunk 2077. Whether it’s a film or a TV show, we have no idea yet, but Anonymous Content Studio has a strong track record in both. This is a different studio from the one behind Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation, which was made by Little Schmidt Productions.
The project was announced by CD Projekt Red themselves back in October 2023, but nothing has been forthcoming since then. That announcement stated they were still searching for a screenwriter, so the story was unwritten and unconfirmed at that time.
CD Projekt Red has, however, been focusing on adaptations of the world into other mediums, with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners receiving a Blu-ray release and a manga sequel, and a board game being crowdfunded for over $8 million on GameFound.
