Huawei launches its foldable Mate X smartphone with 5G for $2,600

After years of speculations, foldable smartphones are finally here. In fact, we now have two of them already. Samsung launched its folding smartphone, called Galaxy Fold, on February 20. A few days later, Huawei has now unveiled its own version of foldable smartphone. Called Mate X, the smartphone comes with 5G connectivity, based on Huawei’s modem called Baolong 5000. The company claims it to be the fastest 5G smartphone.

World’s thinnest foldable phone

The Huawei Mate X is 11 mm thick when folded, making it “the world’s thinnest foldable phone”. On unfolding, thickness measures 5.4 mm on the most part. However, there’s a bump on one end to house the components such as camera, which needs more room to operate properly. The device is expected to feature four cameras, though the demo units had only three.

Despite such a thin profile, Huawei has managed to put a 4,500 mAh battery in the Mate X. The device is charged through a USB-C port, and comes with 55W SuperCharge, making it the fastest charging smartphone. Huawei says the Mate X can top up 85% of the battery in 30 minutes.

The Huawei Mate X has an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels. It doesn’t fold symmetrically, but instead, folds from one side. On folding, a 6.6-inch screen with a resolution of 2480 x 1148 pixels remains on top, while the rest folds behind and aligns with the bump to give the device an even shape.

An interesting thing about this out-folding device is that it has a display and the primary camera setup on the same side. Huawei says you’ll be able to take “best in class selfies,” with this device. Though the company didn’t reveal the camera specs, “Leica” logo can be seen below the vertically stacked cameras. So one can easily expect flagship-tier images.

The Huawei Mate X will go on sale towards the end of Q2 2019, or early Q3, for €2,299 (roughly $2,600). It will be available in Interstellar Blue color only.
