How to parry in Avowed: Everything you need to know

Since Avowed has a heavy emphasis on combat, whether that be through using weapons or spells, you’ll want to know how to parry, allowing you to use defense to your advantage before attacking back.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as a single button press and you’re good to go so here, we’ll take a look at how parrying works in Avowed so you can use the mechanic to aid you in those hard battles.

How to unlock parrying in Avowed

As previously alluded to, when you drop in to Avowed, you can’t simply just parry right off the bat.

Instead, you actually have to unlock the skill, making things a little confusing for those of you who are used to using the mechanic straight away.

To unlock parrying in Avowed, you must acquire the aptly named Parry ability located in the Ranger ability tree.

This is the third ability in the Level 1 section so you can pick it up very early on since you’ll also only need to spend one point in order to make it yours.

How to parry in Avowed

As the description of the ability states, you must perform a “perfect” block (LT on controller) against an incoming melee attack in order to proc Parry and then initiate a counter attack.

The exact timing is a little finicky but you know when you’re successful as you’ll hear an in-game metal-like sound as well as the enemy in front of you getting knocked back.

If you’re having a bit of trouble with the Parry timing, try to perform your block right as the enemy is about to hit you and you should get a good feel for it.

Additionally, once you start leveling up, there are additional Ranks you can unlock for the Parry ability which can increase it by 25%, and then 50%, if you opt for acquiring Rank 3.
