Ghana Gaming Commission Board to address ‘evolving trends’
In a press release, the interior ministry stressed the urgent need to update the country’s legal framework for gaming. They pointed out that “the current legal framework of the Gaming Act does not address the evolving trends in the gaming industry, particularly with the advent of artificial intelligence.”
They also encouraged the new board to back the passage of a draft Legislative Instrument (LI), currently under review, which aims to give the Commission stronger tools to regulate the sector more effectively and sustainably.
Minister Mohammed-Mubarak took a moment to applaud the Commission’s recent progress. He pointed out accomplishments like the development of a health and safety policy and the launch of the “Purple Month” campaign, which raises awareness about gaming addiction among the youth. He also acknowledged efforts around “the drafted Legislative Instrument (LI) for regulatory reform.”
The minister expressed confidence in the board, saying he believes they’ll handle their duties with both dedication and integrity. He pledged full support from the ministry, adding, “the inauguration of the Governing Board marks a new chapter in the Commission’s journey towards achieving its mandate.”
The new Board Chairman, James Enu Esq., also shared a few words. According to the release, he committed to working closely with all stakeholders and striving to improve the industry. As he put it, “the Board will work to the best of its ability and engage key stakeholders to improve the gaming industry.”
