A South Korean gambling site is under investigative scrutiny after ties to North Korean hacker groups.
As reported by South Korean news site MBN, the person responsible for operating the site was investigated by the country’s gambling regulators. The man, who has not been named in the investigation, is a 50-year-old Seoul resident, and the crimes hark back to 2022.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Public Investigation Division 1 alleges that Mr A’s actions of running an illegal gambling operation have returned billions of won in returns.
South Korean man under investigation for hacker ties
One billion won is the equivalent of seven hundred thousand dollars in illegal gambling returns that have gone unreported to the South Korean government.
According to MBN, the prosecutor’s office has tied Mr A’s actions to those of North Korean hackers, who also siphoned some of the earnings from the site to the coffers of the controversial nation.
Prosecutors in South Korea are incredibly strict on gambling laws, with Article 247 of Criminal Law in South Korea stating, “Setting up Places for Gambling, etc. A person who, for gain, sets up a place or space for gambling shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than five years, or by a fine not exceeding thirty million won.”
Telegram was also allegedly used as a means for Mr A to communicate with the hackers. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Public Investigation Division,1, also has suspicions that servers in China are also a possible base of operation for the illegal gambling platform.
As we reported, South Korean illegal gambling has been on the rise in 2025, with a raft of police interventions to curb these unregulated money-making enterprises.
Police in Busan apprehended a suspect who is alleged to have run an illegal gambling ring worth 800 billion won ($557.3 million). The individual evaded police capture until being confronted by the officers of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
