Miramax has launched a movie rental app on Facebook that lets users choose from a limited selection of films. Each rental costs 30 Facebook credits, which works out to about $3.
Miramax joins Warner Bros., Universal and Paramount in offering movie rentals via Facebook. The social networking giant has also partnered with Netflix, but that integration is only available in Canada and Latin America due to outstanding legal questions in the United States.
Miramax eXperience, as it’s called, is currently available in the United States, United Kingdom and Turkey and features movies like Trainspotting, Kill Bill and No Country For Old Men.
“We are big believers in Facebook and what it could mean for the future of the content business,” reads a post on Miramax’s company blog. “Today there are over 50 million friends on Facebook that mention a Miramax film in their profile, interact with our Miramax page, or like the fan pages of beloved Miramax titles and talent – from Good Will Hunting to Pulp Fiction and Ben Affleck to Quentin Tarantino.”
The U.S. version of the app currently hosts 20 movies. Once a movie is rented, you have 30 days to start watching it, at which point you have 48 hours to finish it.
The Facebook app, currently in beta, also includes a gaming component, which appears to still be under construction.
