Sad news as the team behind the ever-popular EmuDeck software that is so popular on handhelds such as the Steam Deck and ROG Ally has confirmed the death of its anticipated hardware version and the project is now no more. Well, it never was, but it is now a case of what might have been.
Back at the end of August Readwrite Gaming reported that EmuDeck was planning a hardware ‘console’ that bore more than a passing resemblance in appearance at least to the late, great Sega Dreamcast.
In truth, the mini-PC running the Bazzite Linux front-end was always destined to struggle. Two flavors with wildly differing prices were mooted but ultimately there are so many ways to play retro games these days including the aforementioned machines like the Steam Deck, and countless other free options that do not require a $600 plus PC.
Anyway, all that is now irrelevant as the the guys at EmuDeck only got around 40 orders and required at least 100 to make it feasible so have now canceled the project and refunded all backers.
A shame as we always want to see retro gaming flourish. The Emudeck guys promise they will be back with something new soon, so like all good ideas, this may turn out to be just an iteration of an eventual genius success. Here’s hoping, as EmuDeck has already done so much to make the retro community more accessible to many more people.
Meanwhile, if you are backer of the under-fire SuperSega hardware project, Time Extension reports that rather than just the $3 it took to pledge to back the project, backers have now been charged getting on for $400 – the full price – unexpectedly, although the people at SuperSega say this was always due to happen and it was badly worded in the FAQ.
Doubts in the community continue to rise about SuperSega’s viability as only a (strange to say the least) video has been shown and nobody has seen any proof of Dreamcast emulation yet.
We will be keeping an eye on this one and hope it gets a happy ending despite the feelings of unease surrounded it.
