A lawsuit that was filed in 2021 will now be concluded as Elon Musk’s X agrees to pay about $10 million to Donald Trump.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the agreement follows the lawsuit the president brought against the company and its former chief executive after he was de-platformed after the riot which took place in the U.S. Capitol.
Elon Musk wasn’t the owner of the social media network at the time, with it still being named Twitter during this period and Jack Dorsey was the chief executive.
The publisher cites “some people familiar with the matter” as they say Trump’s team considered letting the lawsuit fizzle out but ultimately moved forward with the settlement.
The Twitter lawsuit was initially dismissed in 2022 by a federal judge but was later appealed by lawyers. Then, the federal appeals court heard arguments in the fall of 2023 but a ruling hadn’t been issued at that point. It was last week when the parties involved filed a motion to dismiss the appeal after discussing a settlement agreement, with it being granted on Monday.
X CEO is Elon Musk, who has become close to Donald Trump
The Tesla CEO has been a supporter of the American businessman for some time now and he has become very close to him over the last several months. Musk has been spotted alongside Trump many times, including standing beside him in the Oval Office on Tuesday afternoon.
It was in October of 2022 when Elon Musk purchased Twitter and took it over, with Trump’s account being reinstated in November after a poll was created to ask users their opinion.
A similar lawsuit was brought against Meta has also recently been settled, as it was last month when Meta agreed to pay $25 million. $22 million of the total figure will go to Trump’s presidential library.
Within the article that broke the story, ‘people familiar with the matter’ suggest Trump’s attorneys are also expected to pursue a settlement with Google. This is due to the company banning the president from YouTube.
