Dying Light 2 will be yanked from sale, making way for Dying Light: The Beast

tl;dr

  • Dying Light: The Beast, initially free for Ultimate Edition owners of Dying Light 2, will no longer be available for sale.
  • Techland will remove the Ultimate Edition from online stores by Sept. 30, ensuring current owners keep their content.
  • Dying Light: The Beast revisits Kyle Crane's story, giving him "beast-like" powers after 13 years of captivity and experiments.

After telling everyone that the next entry in the Dying Light franchise, Dying Light: The Beast, would be free to those with the $100 Ultimate Edition of 2021’s Dying Light 2, Techland has told fans that version of the game will be removed from sale.

Techland dropped the oh-by-the-way on Friday, three days after Dying Light: The Beast was revealed during Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live. Dying Light: The Beast began as a premium DLC expansion (called “Story DLC 2”)  for Dying Light 2, but the project grew large enough that Poland-based Techland decided to launch it as a standalone.

Of course, since it had its origins as premium DLC promised to those who bought the Ultimate Edition, Techland felt obligated to parcel it out to them for free. It also means they’d be cannibalizing sales of the spin-off if value hunters without the game just bought an Ultimate Edition, or the $34.49 upgrade unlock that delivers its content to a standard edition of the game

Both are currently on sale on four online marketplaces: the Epic Games Store, Steam, Microsoft Store, and PlayStation Store. They will be removed from sale Sept. 30, Techland said, noting that current owners of the game (and presumably anyone who buys it before then) will not lose their content or their entitlement to Dying Light: The Beast.

It’s a bit of a clumsy look for Techland especially as they can’t be precise about what Dying Light: The Beast will cost. A news release accompanying the game’s ONL premiere said it would be $39.99, but Techland later walked this back, saying it would announce both the game’s release date and price later.

What is Dying Light 2: The Beast about?

Dying Light 2: The Beast takes players back to the events of the first Dying Light, released in 2015, and its hero, Kyle Crane. Crane, voiced by his original actor, Roger Craig Smith, has been held in captivity and subjected to cruel scientific experiments and study for the preceding 13 years.

The Beast refers not to Crane’s mission of vengeance, but to an enormous monster out in the woods beyond. It could also mean the fact Crane now has zombie DNA enmeshed with his own, which gives him “beast-like” powers and abilities that he unleashes on his tormentors and, one assumes, the Beast itself at the end.

Dying Light: The Beast will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
