A Danish Twitch streamer has been fined DKK 10,000 ($1,505) after authorities found he was promoting gambling websites that lacked proper licensing in Denmark.
This is the second instance where the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has successfully penalized a streamer for illegally advertising gaming platforms via Twitch.
The violation was initially flagged by the Danish Gambling Authority back in 2023, after discovering that the streamer repeatedly showcased gambling providers without Danish authorization on his live broadcasts.
Twitch is widely popular for live-streaming games and lifestyle content, attracting significant attention from young audiences.
Gambling was also very prominent on the platform until a few years ago where the rules were changed, banning a plethora of online casinos such as Stake from its games being live streamed.
In Twitch’s reformed terms and conditions, it also states that those who still want to live stream gambling content cannot “share links or affiliate codes to sites that contain slots, roulette, or dice games”.
Following a thorough investigation on this specific case by police, the streamer was deemed in breach of Denmark’s strict gambling legislation and subsequently issued the DKK 10,000 penalty — a figure originally recommended by the Danish Gambling Authority.
This recent enforcement just shows the regulator’s ongoing commitment to crack down on illegal gambling promotions, especially via influential online platforms.
Denmark’s tight regulation of gambling services requires operators to obtain proper licensing, designed to protect consumers, and uphold responsible gambling practices.
Advertising or promoting unauthorized gambling platforms is strictly prohibited, and violators risk substantial fines similar to the one in question here.
With these cases like these, it is clear that Danish authorities send a strong message to online influencers and streamers that they can’t just do as they please.
Promoting unlicensed gambling is not only illegal but will also be actively monitored and penalized accordingly, however long the investigations take to complete.
