Critical Role, the most prominent Dungeons & Dragons group on the internet, has hinted in a Rolling Stones interview that a Critical Role video game could well be in the works. Here’s everything we know so far:
In a recent interview, Laura Bailey said that “[they’ve] been talking about creating a video game since [they] first started playing together”. Adding to this, CEO Travis Willingham stated that they might have “something really exciting to share at the end of the year […], just in time for [their] 10-year anniversary”. Critical Role has grown into a massive multimedia enterprise in the last few years, diversifying its business beyond just its online D&D shows. They’ve got novels, comic books, and most notably, an Amazon Studios animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, which now has three seasons and is set for a fourth. They’ve even got their own subscription-based platform, Beacon, and have started to move beyond D&D by making their own tabletop RPG systems, like Candela Obscura and the upcoming Daggerheart. The sky seems to be the limit for this merry band of D&Ders.
It comes as no surprise then that a video game would be in the works, given that many of the Critical Role cast are “nerdy-ass voice actors” and star in several prominent video game titles. Matthew Mercer has provided voice work for a slew of games, from Resident Evil to Mortal Combat, whilst Laura Bailey is known for voicing Ellie in The Last of Us video games. There have been no hints yet as to what kind of game this might be but it wouldn’t be surprising to see them collaborate with huge names. Dungeons & Dragons, for instance, is always eager to work with Critical Role, which is unsurprising given that the group helped propel the game to mainstream popularity. It’d be equally interesting to see them do their own world-building. Since they’ve worked on their own TTRPGs, this would make a lot of sense in terms of building up a Critical Role franchise.
