The Borderlands games have gone through a turbulent time in recent years with the titles out of the core trilogy simply not performing as they should.
With the recent movie not exactly living up to expectations either, fans of the franchise certainly need a pick-me-up in order to keep them engaged.
Enter Borderlands 4, the much anticipated follow-up to the aforementioned trilogy which many hope will be the savior.
Here, we’ll take a look at what the Borderlands 4 release date is, any trailers, its platforms, and more so you’re as clued up as you can be for the next vault-hunting escapades.
Borderlands 4 expected release date
As confirmed by its appearance at the February 2025 State of Play, Borderlands 4 will release on September 23, 2025.
This is surprising to some considering that there hasn’t been too much build up, with little information been made public about the game, never mind if it was even in development or not.
However, what this does mean is that it has been under wraps for some time now and must be in a very advanced stage, with the devs confident it is getting closer to being the final product.
Borderlands 4 trailers
There have a few trailers for Borderlands 4 – the first basically announcing the game’s existence, the second giving us some in-engine shots, and the latest release date confirmation video with even more info to boot.
The first trailer is an intriguing one that revealed a planet on the verge of breaking and what appeared to be a robot picking up the trademark Psycho mask after burning through the atmosphere of another.
Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Studios, alluded to some secrets that have yet to be uncovered from the trailer, so pay close attention and you may be the one to unlock them.
The second trailer give us a snippet as to who the new characters we’ll be controlling are, a good look at various vistas, and an intriguing tease as to who we’ll be facing up against.
This next trailer, showcased at the February 2025 PlayStation State of Play, provided us with that aforementioned release date as well as a fresh new look at some looting and shooting that the series is famous for.
Borderlands 4 platforms
It has been confirmed that Borderlands 4 will release on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
This was shown in the first trailer for the game, so it was nice to get the info right off the bat rather than speculating later down the road.
Obviously, this means that Borderlands 4 will be skipping the older generation of consoles – PS4 and Xbox One – so you will need to update to the current gen to experience that trademark Borderlands gameplay once more.
Is Borderlands 4 set on Pandora?

Borderlands 4 follows the direct events of Borderlands 3’s ending where (spoilers) Lilith essentially sacrifices herself to stop Pandora from being destroyed.
Because of this, yes, Pandora does survive, but does it return in Borderlands 4?
Well, the answer is a little unclear because in the description of the first official trailer for the game, it states that you will be searching for “new treasures to loot on an all-new planet”.
You did head to different planets in Borderlands 3 after beginning on Pandora, so it could just mean that it follows a similar pattern in this next iteration.
However, since the trilogy has come to an end and the specific mention of ‘all-new’ it could point directly to leaving Pandora behind for good.
Will Borderlands 4 be a looter shooter?
It has been confirmed from that first reveal of Borderlands 4 that it will follow the same formula as the trilogy that came before it with its looter shooter antics.
While there will undoubtedly be new mechanics introduced to keep the gameplay fresh, at its core it will be mechanics that Borderlands fans know and love.
