The decentralized social media network Bluesky announces one million people have joined the platform within just one week, with it now topping the App Store charts.
The influx has come flooding in after the 2024 US Election, with researchers suggesting a more liberal community has moved from X to the platform.
In an interview with The Guardian, social media researcher Axel Bruns said Bluesky offered an alternative to Elon Musk’s X: “It’s become a refuge for people who want to have the kind of social media experience that Twitter used to provide, but without all the far-right activism, the misinformation, the hate speech, the bots and everything else.
“The more liberal kind of Twitter community has really now escaped from there and seems to have moved en masse to Bluesky.”
Just a few weeks ago, around half a million people ditched X in favor for Bluesky after it announced plans to change the block feature.

The Tesla CEO has strong ties to the future President, with regular posts of support for the Republican throughout his campaign. Musk has even been spotted with the entrepreneur and his family in celebrations post-election results.
Bluesky, which was founded in 2021, has seen substantial growth over the past few years with the last week being no different.
It was only on October 24 when they said they had 13 million users and announced they had raised $15 million in Series A financing.
The company explained where the money will be going: “With this fundraise, we will continue supporting and growing Bluesky’s community, investing in Trust and Safety, and supporting the ATmosphere developer ecosystem.
“In addition, we will begin developing a subscription model for features like higher quality video uploads or profile customizations like colors and avatar frames.
“Bluesky will always be free to use — we believe that information and conversation should be easily accessible, not locked down. We won’t uprank accounts simply because they’re subscribing to a paid tier.”
The social media platform is now sitting in the number one spot for ‘Top Free Apps’ on the App Store, with Threads, ChatGPT, Google, Temu and TikTok trailing behind.
