The Bangladesh Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a new campaign targeting online betting platforms in the wake of a newly passed law.
The new enforcement campaign is part of a crackdown on online gambling and betting platforms, marking the first major operations under the newly passed Cyber Security Ordinance 2025. Under the new cyber law, operating or promoting online gambling can land perpretrators with up to two years in prison or a fine of around $80,000.
The CID state that the renewed focus on online gambling and betting stems from concern around the social and financial impact of online betting platforms. Illegal digital betting is said to be connected to growing online gambling addiction, especially among young people, as well as issues among families and even suicide.
Online gambling in Bangladesh
Already since the bill was passed, Bangladeshi investigators have identified over 1,000 financial service agents thought to be connected to illegal gambling transactions. The CID has passed on the details to Bangladesh Bank, with a recommendation to revoke their professional licenses and impose financial penalties.
The platforms targeted by the CID so far include apps, websites, and social media channels, often offering illegal online gambling services under the guise of gaming and entertainment services. The authorities argue that this practice lures in new customers with the promise of easy money, but ultimately end up in serious debt or even legal trouble.
The law affects not just the operation of such gambling platforms but also any associated transactions, enabling the focus on financial agents as noted above. The CID has asked the public to avoid engaging in online gambling and has employed media campaigns to raise awareness, especially among young people. Locals are also encouraged to report any suspicious activity or knowledge of illegal transactions to the Cyber Police Centre using official hotlines or via email.
