Like most top brands, Samsung always keeps applying patents for new technologies. While not all of those patent turn out into actual products its still interesting to see where the technology is headed towards in the future. On that note, Samsung has been constantly applying patents on AR related technology for a while now. There were patents of devices when the Google Glass had just gained popularity a couple of years back and then Samsung even showcased a prototype of AR remote monitor glasses developed by its C-Labs in the recent times. However, we are yet to see an actual wearable AR product by Samsung that could take on the likes of Hololens, Avegant AR,etc.
Now, yet another Patent filed by Samsung back in 2015 has been published which could most likely the AR glasses that Samsung would mass produce in the near future. In the patent, Samsung mentions it as, a “holographic see-through optical device.” The holography term in the patent hints that it glasses would portray both 3D and depth information of objects while being see through like an AR glass; This could be an all new type of technology that we haven’t seen in any of the current AR products.
Another hint that Samsung provides on the glasses using a new technology is described in the patent itself as, “Most of the known optical devices of augmented reality are based on a combination of eyepiece eyepieces to enlarge an image formed by LCDs, LCoSs, CRTs, OLEDs, or other spatial light modulators having compact size and image combiners are based on, for example, a beam-splitting cube or a semitransparent plate.”
Samsung have even gone on to describe the possible applications of the AR holographic glasses as “An augmented reality device may be applied to a helmet or an eyeglass and may be arranged to locate holographic see-through optical devices at the respective eyes of a user. Alternatively, a holographic see-through optical device may be embodied as a monocular-type device that is arranged just in front of an eye and includes an embedded micro display.”
