Rebellion has not only been busy working on the much anticipated new game in the Sniper Elite series but has also just launched into Early Access a successor to one of gaming’s most iconic sports games of the 16-bit era, Speedball.
Based loosely on the cult movie Rollerball, Speedball is a futuristic take on ball sports, mixing the NFL and rugby in a brutal battle.
Set in 2138 the game allows you to, “venture into the grim future where mega-corporations use Speedball to distract the downtrodden masses from their miserable lives.”
Speedball, back in the day was hugely popular on the Commodore Amiga but also saw success on consoles such as the Sega Genesis / Megadrive.
Ice cream, Ice cream
Speedball launches into an expected Early Access period which is scheduled to last around 12 months with a roadmap including, “a host of new content and features added before the ‘full version’ of the game is released. Features that are planned during the Early Access period include team management and draft system, player and manager progression, Career Mode, skill-based matchmaking and leaderboards, new cosmetics, skins and arenas, and more.”
As you can see from the video trailer, if you are an original player there are a lot of similarities between the old and new games when it comes to the arena, just things have a little more modern polish these days.
You can get in on the Early Access for Speedball on Steam with the game currently priced at £14.99/$17.99/€17.49
