The United States is reported to be weighing up a new approach to its exports of AI chips, including from the likes of chipmaker giants Nvidia and AMD.
Bloomberg reported that government insiders said deliberations are in the early stages and remain fluid.
The new approach could see a ceiling set on export licenses for certain countries due to national security. The publisher cites sources “who described the private discussions on condition of anonymity.”
According to the report, the idea has gained traction in recent weeks and the policy would “build on a new framework to ease the licensing process for AI chip shipments to data centers in places like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.”
The presidential election is looming, with just three weeks to go, so it’s not yet known whether the potential change of approach would be intended to be imposed in Biden’s term.
In the US, the Bureau of Industry and Security oversees and deals with export controls. They declined to comment, as did Nvidia, AMD Inc, and a representative for Intel Corp.
The White House National Security Council has also declined to comment but pointed to a joint statement with the US and UAE on artificial intelligence.
The press release was published on September 23 of this year. It states that they recognize “the importance for each of our nations to pursue their own national AI and advanced technologies strategies, and in order to fully realize the benefits of AI and technology, the U.S. and the UAE affirm the importance of deepening bilateral ties and strengthening cooperation between our governments, companies, and workforces.”
When signing off, the news release states: “The US and the UAE look forward to deepening collaboration across AI and related technologies to propel their strategic partnership forward, delivering a more prosperous, secure future for their peoples, underpinned by a shared commitment to safe, secure, and trustworthy AI.”
