Soon Twitter will be changing the way its direct messages work. Traditionally in “Twitter land” if you wanted to send anyone a Direct Message then that person had to be following you and vice versa.
Now that is all about to change with the new settings that have started rolling out this week. If you look in the user settings, there is now a new checkbox labelled “Receive direct messages from any user“, the explanation is: if you check this option, any Twitter user that follows you will be able to send you a DM, regardless of whether you decide to follow them back.”
This is a fantastic move from Twitter, that takes its service more into the instant messaging world and there are also some rumours that we might see some Twitter messaging applications that will capalise on this feature. The main hope I have is that the rather “Old” 140 character limit gets abolished and then we can see Twitter as an alternative to WhatsApp, BBM, MessageMe, KikMessenger, LiveProfile and others.
This new feature is getting gradually rolled out globally so if you haven’t got it (like I haven’t got it yet), we will just have to wait!
