Analytics and marketing firm Teradata has revealed plans to build a global Internet of Things (IoT) analytics unit, based in India, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The unit will be responsible for researching and producing innovative ways to analyse an IoT system, building on the company’s current service lineup of analytic functions to make systems more efficient, less likely to fail, and cheaper for the end customer.

Teradata says it will hire data scientists, engineers, and software designers for its “special-ops” team to build and progress its IoT analytics platform. The team will be focused on data movement, database management, cloud-based analytic solutions, and simplification of advanced analytics systems.
“The smartest people at Teradata are laser focused on building the best technologies to power the Analytics of Things,” said president of Teradata Labs, Oliver Ratzesberger. “With this announcement, we are making it easier for our customers to move sensor data around, optimize data management systems to deal with the massive volumes of data, and run real-time, advanced analytics against streams of IoT data.”
Teradata also updating Listener
The analytics firm is hoping that the investment will improve its services and applications for customers. At the same time, utilising machine learning may allow Teradata to create new services.
Alongside the announcement of a new analytics unit, Teradata has also updated its Listener service. Customers will be able to find connectors more easily and can stream sensor data for analysis. Teradata says this streaming option will eliminate the usual cost of capturing and managing continuous streams of data from an IoT system.
Analytics is as much a part of IoT as the sensors and connectors that power the system; a necessary feature for businesses that are worried about the costs and efficiency of the IoT system. Teradata tries to provide that service for businesses, and it might be getting a whole lot better in the near future.
