Telegram introduces NFT collectibles in new update

Telegram — one of the top instant messaging mobile applications — rolled out non-fungible token (NFT) collectibles in the latest update.

In a Jan. 1 post, Telegram announced “the first update of 2025, which includes collectible gifts that can be transferred or re-sent to other users.” Telegram users will also now have “the ability to send reactions to in-chat events, filters for message search, an in-app QR code scanner and so much more.”

The details

Gifts received on Telegram can now be upgraded to be made into NFT collectibles, with those having special attributes and being transferrable among users. These tokens can also be auctioned on non-fungible token marketplaces. The post explains:

“When you upgrade a gift it unlocks a new appearance from dozens of custom variations made by Telegram artists. Collectibles also receive a random set of secondary traits, including a background color, icon, and number. This means every collectible gift is a unique work of art — and that some will be more rare than others.”

Telegram already features over 20 existing gifts including the Homemade Cake, Jelly Bunny, Spiced Wine and Santa Hat. All of those can already be converted into NFTs with 1,400 unique appearances and the post promising that there is “more to come in the future.”

When sending gifts to others, Telegram users can now choose to send it already upgraded. Still, doing so “costs a small amount of Telegram Stars, which are used to cover blockchain fees.”

Scam prevention

Telegram also just rolled out a third-party-led verification system that “allows public figures and organizations to become verified, so users can quickly identify official sources of information.” Verification can be assigned by official third-party services.

“This decentralized platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation — with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms.”

Verified chats show “a small logo appears before their name,” and their profile provides “a detailed explanation of their status and what it means.” This system is separate from the verified checkmarks that Telegram provides for public figures and organizations.
