The rumors that Samsung’s Galaxy S III would have a full 1080p display seemed a bit hard to believe, if not quite unnecessary for a smartphone-sized screen, and sure enough, the phone will have a standard 720p resolution. That’s not the only rumored display spec that ended up missing the mark, as there had also been rumors that the GS3 would see Samsung introduce Super AMOLED HD Plus displays. The big difference with these components is that they deliver 720p while maintaining a full set of RGB subpixels, instead of the PenTile matrix employed in the non-plus version. Now a new rumor suggests that the HD Plus will make its debut on Samsung’s GT-i9500 Tizen handset.
We first heard about the Tizen open-source smartphone platform in early fall of last year, with Samsung and Intel leading the charge. The GT-i9500 “Fraser” is a handset Samsung’s put together for developers of Tizen to start working with, and a version of it may eventually arrive as a consumer-oriented device.
Assuming everything goes well with this first big test of Super AMOLED HD Plus on Tizen, we’d expect to see Samsung quickly adopt the same tech for its phones on Android, and possibly WP8.
