Samsung will be opening a new research and development center in Espoo Finland which is also where Nokia’s headquarters are based , affirming Samsung’s domination over it’s rival. Details on investment plans and staffing will be released soon.
Other technology firms have already opened their research and development facilities in Finland this includes companies such as Intel and Huawei. Companies are trying to take advantage of Finland’s high ratio of engineers and software developers some of whom we’re previously working at Nokia. Since Samsung is more dominant it aims to attract the best engineers and software developers from Finland and possibly ex-Nokia engineers and software developers.
Nokia itself has taken a step back by cutting its own resources in the last few years by firing thousands of employees and with the sale of its glass and steel waterfront office building located in Espoo. Nokia still operates in this building as they have leased it back , this certainly hints at Nokia having cash flow problems.
Previously Nokia was regarded as the leader in the worldwide mobile phone market but Samsung has taken this position. Majority due to smartphones as Samsung shipped more units in Q1 2013 then the next top 4 vendors combined.
