Following the launch of the PlayStation 5 Slim in November of 2023, console fans wasted no time in trading rumors about a possible PlayStation 5 Pro that was suggested to be on its way this year.
As the name would suggest, the PS5 Slim was a smaller, lighter console that still packed a punch, offering increased storage and a detachable disk drive to boot.
However, the once mysterious PS5 Pro has now been officially revealed to the world, showcasing the true power of what can be bolted on to the original tech, there’s no going back. Here’s a closer look at the PlayStation 5 Pro release date, the specs, and price.
What is the PlayStation 5 Pro release date?
Official release date: November 7, 2024
Thanks to the official reveal from Sony themselves via September 10th’s technical presentation, we have the confirmed PS5 Pro release date of November 7, 2024.
Initially, a story on Insider Gaming on July 18 by Tom Henderson hinted at a possible delay and a 2025 release for Sony’s mid-generation refresh console. Henderson has built a solid reputation for exclusives over the past year and had initially been told that the launch was earmarked for late November 2024, but had since heard from sources that there was concern over a possible lack of first-party releases ready in time.
However, the report revealed that developers could start submitting their applications supporting the PlayStation 5 Pro to CertOps (Platform Certification & Operations) on July 30 — a date set 18 months ago. Furthermore, starting September 15, all game applications for the PS5 must support the PS5 Pro. This information was shared with developers earlier this week, indicating that the system was still on track for a possible release in the latter half of November 2024.
What is the PS5 Pro price?
Official price: $699 (£699, €799, ¥119,980)
Much like the release date, much of the chatter around a potential PlayStation 5 Pro price was speculative. However, this isn’t the first time Sony has released a Pro console following a Slim version. The company did just that back in 2016 with the PlayStation 4 Pro.
Back then, the Pro console cost $100 / €50 / £50 more than the Slim version. By that logic, we expected the PlayStation 5 Pro to cost in the region of $599.99 / £529.99 if we just hike up the Slim’s price of $499.99 / £479.99. However, we now have the official pricing – $699 (£699, €799, ¥119,980) – much higher than everyone thought.
What are the PlayStation 5 Pro specs?
Naturally, the PS5 Pro is far more powerful than that of the PS5 and PS5 Slim. Sony is touting it as the “our most advanced and innovative console hardware to date” and this is certainly true when looking at the new internals and tech upgrades.
The GPU has 67% more Compute Units compared to the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Due to this, it enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.
Sony has added even more powerful ray tracing, providing more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This means rays will be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
And finally, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is the other big addition which is an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity.
Here are the specs compared to the PS5 Slim:
Specs | PS5 Slim | PS5 Pro |
---|---|---|
CPU | AMD Ryzen Zen 2 (8 cores, 16 threads, 3.5GHz) | AMD Ryzen Zen 2 (8 cores, 16 threads, 3.5GHz) |
GPU | AMD Radeon RDNA 2 (10.28 teraflops) | AMD Radeon RX 6800 equivalent (approx. 17 teraflops) |
RAM | 16GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR6 |
Storage | 825GB SSD | 2TB SSD |
Output | 4K 120Hz, HDMI 2.1 | 4K 120Hz, 8K, HDMI 2.1 |
WiFi | WiFi 6 | WiFi 7 |
Before this official reveal, a document obtained by the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead showed (in a video Sony had removed) several crucial specifications for the highly anticipated new console. It indicated that the Pro model will feature significant enhancement in graphical performance, boasting rendering speeds up to 45% higher than the current PlayStation 5. The prediction was backed up by several other gaming media outlets, and was made a reality with the above announcement.
