OpenAI’s next model, GPT-4.5, rumored to be coming as early as next week

TLDR

  • Rumors suggest OpenAI may release GPT-4.5 next week.
  • Microsoft engineers preparing servers for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5.
  • Sam Altman confirms roadmap for upcoming AI model on X.
  • GPT-4.5 internally codenamed "Orion," expected before GPT-5.

The AI industry could have another new model to compete with by next week as rumors suggest OpenAI could be releasing GPT-4.5.

A senior editor at The Verge, Tom Warren, cites “a source familiar with the company’s plans” as he writes that “Microsoft engineers are currently readying server capacity for OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models.”

The reporter goes on to say he understands Microsoft is expecting to host the new AI model as early as next week.

The technology-focused company has already teased a few insights about the upcoming model which has been codenamed Orion.

Warren continues: “I’m told that Microsoft is expecting GPT-5 in late May, which aligns with Altman’s promise of the next-gen model arriving within a matter of months.”

The actual details haven’t been confirmed by the company, nor is a specific date known.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared roadmap of GPT-4.5 on X

In a lengthy post on X (February 12) the CEO Sam Altman shared a roadmap for the upcoming version: “We will next ship GPT-4.5, the model we called Orion internally, as our last non-chain-of-thought model.

“After that, a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.”

This comes after he says there has been a realization about how complicated the product offerings have gotten. “We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence.”

When asked in the replies about an estimated arrival for GPT 4.5 and GPT 5, Altman replied with “weeks/months.”

Later, on February 17, he tweeted “trying GPT-4.5 has been much more of a “feel the AGI” moment among high-taste testers than i expected!”

It was only in October when it was reported that OpenAI was going to launch Orion by December, 2024, but this was quickly denied by Altman who described it as “fake news” on social media.
