Amidst the rumours swirling around the Galaxy X, Samsung’s recently patented foldable phone, a recent design has been revealed. The patent granted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) to Samsung reveals a design similar to the one the Korean company has filed with the WIPO.
The patent granted by KIPO was first spotted by Letsgodigital. It describes a foldable Galaxy X with two screens attached to a hinge in the centre. The two screens have their own home screen, menu, and app switcher. Each screen is capable of running its own app in both the landscape and portrait modes. The patent also described a few use cases where the two screen would work seamlessly to offer a unique user experience. One screen could serve as the touchscreen controls when playing games while another would show you the gaming content. One screen could display the list of contacts, and another would show you a specific person’s contact card. Unlike the Axon M, Samsung’s attempt offers a screen protection even when the display is closed. It also saves battery life by turning off the screen when one of the screens is not in use.
The two-screen interface could also be used to show the rear camera viewfinder on one screen and the front camera viewfinder on the second one. Although it’s possible that there could be a third camera and speaker on the rear panel. We might also get to see a stylus for the device. The company will reportedly launch the Galaxy X as a limited edition model in its home market to initially gauge the consumer response. If the device receives a good response in Samsung’s home turf, it could then launch in Western markets later in 2018 or 2019.
The foldable Galaxy X smartphone has its own support page on the Samsung website and the model number SM-G888N0 has been spotted on it as well as on multiple platforms online in the last few months. The “N0” in its model number suggests that it is the Korean version of the handset. The Korean Communication Commission (KCC), as well as Bluetooth SIG and the WiFi Alliance, have certified the Samsung’s foldable smartphone.
Samsung is expected to mention the phone during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas by January 2018, which is just weeks away. We might see the new concept unveiled alongside the Galaxy S9.
