Meta rumored to be working on Oakley-branded smart glasses for athletes

A new report suggests Meta is developing Oakley-branded smart glasses which will focus on an athlete-based consumer.

According to Bloomberg, which cites people with knowledge of the matter, the technology giant is developing Oakley-branded smart glasses this year.

The giant’s group which focuses on devices, Reality Labs, is also said to be planning “to release new high-end glasses with a built-in display in 2025,” as sourced by people who asked not to be identified because the initiatives haven’t been announced.

The focus on new offerings comes as companies worldwide are aiming to be innovators within the space of AI, AR, and VR. The major technology brands are all vying to gain consumer attention with new releases.

The report also states the other products that are underway could compete with Apple’s smartwatch and AirPods.

Meta’s rumored Oakley glasses could be focused on cyclists and other athletes

Currently, the company offers Ray-Ban-branded smart glasses that come equipped with an ultra-wide 12 MP camera and five-mic system.

Its Meta AI has been integrated too, along with the creation of the glasses case which doubles as a portable charger.

The first generation of these glasses was released in 2021, followed by the second iteration in October of 2023. While the product is wearable for the everyday user, it could be too bulky for athletes.

Both Ray-Ban and Oakley are subsidiaries of the eyewear group EssilorLuxottica and Oakley already focuses on glasses with sports in mind.

The report by Bloomberg doesn’t expand on the potential features of the glasses but does say the new model would shift the camera to the center of the frame and would be aimed at cyclists and other athletes.

These glasses reportedly have the codename ‘Supernova 2’ and are based on Oakley’s Sphaera glasses.

The brand hasn’t confirmed this alleged new move, but Meta has previously publicly stated they are working on a different device named Orion.

This is what they dub to be “the most advanced pair of AR glasses ever made.”

The company aims to start offering this to developers in 2026 so applications can be built and tested for it.
