Linux, the forgotten mover of worlds.
Ask any punter for the names of operating systems and they might give you Apple, Windows and maybe even Android, Blackberry or Nokia Symbian. Only a few will name Linux and Unix.
And yet, it’s unix and linux that rule most of your chips and appliances. It’s the barebone basics that powers your iMac, Metro windows and cell phone. Nobody really knows and even less will care.
Linux, known as that Penguin software, lies underneath your graphic user interface. It’s the legs underneath your desktop so to speak. In an interview Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, was quoted:
“You use Linux every day but you don’t know it. It’s such a fundamental part of our lives. It runs air traffic control, it makes your ATM pay out and it runs nuclear submarines. Your life, money, and death are in Linux’s hands, so we can keep you alive, clean you out, or kill you. It’s incredible how important it is”.
“The world without Linux would be a very different place. It’s one where computing is kind of crappy and homogeneous. You’d still be using Windows CE on your crappy cell phone. That spells out a world of grim and darkness. Linux is one of the major reasons why that world doesn’t exist.”
