Ever since the Nintendo Switch 2 was officially announced in mid January, there’s been no end to the speculations and rumors surrounding the hotly anticipated next-generation console and its upcoming games. From rumored release dates to speculated prices and launch games, we’ve been busy covering all the news and leaks as they drop. The latest rumor out of the mill relates to the size of the game boxes, with reports suggesting that the physical game cases will be quite a bit larger in comparison to Switch games. A French retailer “Fnac” reportedly leaked the dimensions of the Switch 2’s game cases to X, claiming the boxes will be “19.5cm x 13cm“.

A picture comparing a bigger box versus the original Switch case has also been doing the rounds on X and Reddit, and fans aren’t that happy with this potential design choice. Whilst Nintendo haven’t hard confirmed whether cartridges for the Switch 2 are growing in size, it’s very likely that they aren’t, since they have stated that Switch 1 games are compatible with this new model. Given that Nintendo Switch cartridges are so tiny, a larger box doesn’t seem like the most cost-effective or environmentally friendly option, and the community are voicing these opinions.
Several Redditors referred to these larger boxes as “a waste of plastic”, and some reminisced about the size of DS and 3DS games, which were significantly smaller than the switch cases. Others in the community have suggested that the larger size visually aligns their products with the typical DVD/PS4/Xbox case, which could be more aesthetically pleasing on a collector’s shelf. As fans have also noted, these larger cases much harder to steal than the slim Switch 1 cases, which could have been a factor in this potential design choice.
Of course, all of this is speculation and we won’t know anything concrete until the Nintendo Direct showcase on the 2nd of April, 2025. For now, we’ll have to take each leak with a pinch of salt and wait for the upcoming Direct.
