The original intention of this entire page was to write it in the style of an actual job description, but, in all honesty, I have lost interest after the headline so let’s look at Cosminers in a more traditional way instead.
I’m constantly looking for a new game with a Satisfactory vibe and the announcement trailer gave me a little bit of this, although this definitely has more of a survival aspect along with elements of tower defense and more out-and-out “action” than Satisfactory offered. There was no chance in Satisfactory for example to have your base wiped out by alien species. That would have been way too annoying, but the prospect of waves of alien hordes exists here.
There is a four-player co-op mode which perhaps brings a little Deep Rock Galactic flavor to missions. Indeed, the release notes for Cosminers ahead of a demo scheduled for way out in August make it clear the game is a mammoth mix of genres (too many?), saying:
“The game combines several genres. Depending on the player’s preferences and settings, there will be elements such as:
- Survival – you will have to make sure that the miner survives on this inhospitable alien planet. Will you go outside the base without an adequate supply of oxygen? Fail to take care of adequate food and rest? This will not end well for you….
- Simulator – you will be able to feel how hard work (but also incredibly rewarding) the profession of a space miner will be! Well, and in addition, you will have to take care of the good condition of the base and various types of equipment (if you use them), like items, turrets and drones.
- Economic game – with elements of resource management, base construction, and item crafting – you will have to properly balance all sorts of factors, the needs of the base and your hero. Will you mine the resources yourself with nifty devices, or will you put it in the hands of automated robots?
- FPS – somehow you will have to deal with hordes of rampaging monsters. Will you be able to fend off the night attack on your own?
- Tower defense – how about deploying deadly turrets wreaking havoc instead of risking your life?
- Roguelite – you will die more than once trying to reach your goal. And then your character will be cloned again, consciousness uploaded to a biological shell, and you will once again try to achieve the goal.”
That seems like Cosminers is going after a lot of boxes there, will the team at Gravity Rifters be able to pull it off? Well the trailer looks cool and the game is not set to launch until the first part of next year, so there is plenty of time to get things right. You can wishlist Cosminers on Steam right now.
