Intel Haswell is the fourth generation Intel processor , one above the Ivy Bridge processor which is only about a year old. The main advantage of Haswell is its very low power consumption and improved graphics performance. This will lead to thinner touch PC designs , increased battery life and greater graphics performance.
Linux was run and bench-marked on the Intel Core i7 4770K Haswell processor by Michael Larabel whom described the improvements as ‘terrific’ and said the Linux experience is now waiting improvements as there were some issues in the Intel Linux graphics driver as it seems like not everything for the combination of Linux and Haswell is ready yet. Haswell should have beat Ivy bridge easily in OpenGL benchmarks but this wasn’t the case , perhaps its a kernel issue. The experience of Haswell seemed to be greater on Windows than Linux.
Note: There is an important patch for Haswell in the Linux kernel 3.10 which may have lead to problems so further tests will be conducted by Michael Larabel.
Intel Haswell i7-4770k is currently retailing for around $350/£290 depending on the retailer.
