Microsoft has paused the rollout of Windows 11 24H2 to computers that have certain Ubisoft games installed on them as it has been discovered that the latest major end-of-year update is causing crashes in some of the biggest games in recent times.
Complaints started coming in that the latest Windows 11 update was causing crashing in certain Ubisoft titles such as Star Wars Outlaws and Assassins Creed games, so Microsoft has moved to switch off the automatic updating for PCs that have any affected game currently installed, and have urged users not to manually install the update until the issue has been resolved.
Microsoft published a blog post that said: “After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games. These games might become unresponsive while starting, loading, or during active gameplay. In some cases, users might receive a black screen. The affected games are:
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Assassin’s Creed Origins
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Star Wars Outlaws
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
“To safeguard your Windows update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with these games installed. These devices will not be offered to install Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel.
Important: We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until this issue has been resolved.
Workaround: If the game stops responding to your commands and you cannot exit the game as usual, use Task Manager to close the application. Follow the steps below:”
Ubisoft has rushed to publish a workaround, specifically for Star Wars Outlaws but Microsoft warns that players may still experience some performance issues.
At this stage, there is no indication of what part of the update is failing to play nice specifically with these large Ubisoft games, but the situation is not ideal.
So at this moment if you have Ubisoft games installed that you wish to play, it is definitely worth holding off forcing an update on your Windows 11 machines until this one has been fixed up.
